Facts & Tips

Most people who practise a craft have substantial stores of stock. Artists have paints, acrylics, canvases, brushes, etc. Cross-stitchers have aida, needles, charts, boxes of threads, etc. Knitters have patterns, needles, wool, etc., and potters have clay, wheels, tools, glazes, etc. These are people who have practised their crafts for years and have everything they need.

But what if you are interested in a craft or if you suddenly feel like taking up a hobby but don't know what? It would be a complete waste of money to splash out loads of money on lots of equipment, only to find that a) the activity in question bores you rigid; b) it is impossible for you to do as you are not as creative/artistic or skilled at pottery or sewing etc. as you thought you were, or c) you hate doing it and have to give all the equipment you have bought to a charity shop before you dump it in the bin in a fit of pique.

The best way of finding a craft that is suited to you is to buy a craft kit. These are available at any craft shop and give you a taster of what the craft is about. To give an example; you buy a craft kit that contains paints, a couple of brushes, a small piece of canvas and an instruction book. These are not that expensive, and will enable you to find out whether you are the next Rembrandt or discover the sad fact that you 18 month old nephew is better at painting than you are, and the painting you produced looks like someone threw a couple of pots of paint over it, (although you could always call it modern art and make a fortune!).

You might also buy a knitting kit; needles, wool, pattern and instructions, only to find you drop so many stitches people think you have made a string vest.

Your next step would be to buy a cross stitch kit; aida, threads, needle, chart and instructions, only to find it immensely satisfying, supremely enjoyable and extremely relaxing. This is something you could do forever. The only problem as far as you could see, is why on earth you didn't start doing this years ago.

Craft kits are available for all types of crafts, and also for adults or children. They are reasonably priced, and, as stated earlier, will enable you to try your hand at a new skill, to find if you love it or loathe it, without spending a fortune.
